Microsatellite markers for 24 loci developed for genotyping eastern woodrats, Neotoma floridana

چکیده

Population declines have been documented in many species within the genus Neotoma. Eastern woodrat, Neotoma floridana, recovery efforts Shawnee National Forest (SNF), Illinois USA provided an opportunity to study long-term population-level genetic changes following augmentation and reintroduction. We developed 24 microsatellite markers using QDD genotyped 32 eastern woodrats from a single population. Number of alleles per locus ranged 3 14 (mean = 7). Observed heterozygosity 0.375 0.969 expected 0.485 0.854. Two loci showed significant deviation Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium Bonferroni sequential corrections. These will provide valuable information useful for studying population dynamics closely-related species.

Detoxification rates of wild herbivorous woodrats (Neotoma).

The detoxification systems of mammalian herbivores are thought to have evolved in response to the ingestion of plant secondary compounds. Specialist herbivores consume high quantities of secondary compounds and are predicted to have faster rates of Phase 1 detoxification compared to generalist herbivores. We tested this hypothesis by comparing the performances of a specialist (Neotoma fuscipes)...

Microsatellite markers for eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis).

We describe polymerase chain reaction primer pairs and reaction conditions for amplification of 15 microsatellite loci from eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis). The primers were tested on 23 individuals from a natural population in southwestern North Carolina, USA. These primers yielded an average of 5.9 alleles per locus (range of 2-14), an average observed heterozygosity of 0.45 (range 0.14-0....

A platform for efficient genotyping in Musa using microsatellite markers

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are one of the major fruit crops worldwide with acknowledged importance as a staple food for millions of people. The rich genetic diversity of this crop is, however, endangered by diseases, adverse environmental conditions and changed farming practices, and the need for its characterization and preservation is urgent. With the aim of providi...

Physiological limitations of dietary specialization in herbivorous woodrats (Neotoma spp.)

For nearly three decades, a fundamental objective in the study of plant–herbivore interactions has been to understand why the consumption of a single plant species is rare in mammals, as only a handful of mammalian herbivores (b1%) are dietary specialists. Here, we provide an overview of various factors that may play a role in limiting dietary specialization. We review the energetic consequence...

Nineteen polymorphic microsatellite markers developed for Trachinotus ovatus.

To evaluate the population genetic diversity of the ovate pompano, we isolated and characterized 19 microsatellite markers using a (CA)13-enriched genomic library. Polymorphism was assessed in 30 individuals from a single population collected from the Daya Bay Aquaculture Center, Guangdong, China. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 18 with an average of 7.8. The observed and expec...
